Currently: May 2009

Current Books: I have been on a Carol Shields kick and am reading the last novel she wrote before her death, Unless. I also read The Box Garden and Small Ceremonies (her first novels) recently. I am working through Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. Oddly, this concept has been more helpful in my daily life than in my writing, thus far. LOL! Learning to take my days "bird by bird." Gah, I love Anne Lamott. Am also loving the book of Isaiah for Bible study. The second half of Isaiah, more specifically. It is all about comfort, restoration, reconciliation, forgiveness and redemption. These are all themes that are so important to my life, right now.

Current Playlist: Audio books for now. Listened to Sula by Toni Morrison and am onto Love, also by Toni Morrison. She reads her own work, and she is amazing.

Current Shame Inducing Guilty Pleasure: Eating dessert first. Have done that two nights in a row.

Current Colors: Spring and summer colors. Bright! Bright! Bright!

Current Fetish: My ruby red toes. The color looks like the ruby slippers in Oz, complete with sparkles. Love it!

Current Drink: Hubby got me a Mt Dew Voltage. I don't drink Mt Dew often. But, I am enjoying it today.

Current Food: eh. My meds suppress appetite. Ice Cream is what sounds good lately.

Current Favorite Favorite: My man. I actually love him even more than books. Amazing, isn't it?

Current Wishlist: Summer always makes me want to go clothes shopping. This summer especially, b/c my summer wardrobe is severely lacking.

Current Needs: Dental work. Eye exam and new glasses.

Current Triumph(s): Making the trip to and from Natchez, by myself, without any serious hang ups.

Current Bane(s) of my existence: Money, Procrastination

Current Celebrity Crush: nada

Current Indulgence: Buying Diet Cokes from the gas station almost daily. Spending entire days reading at the church.

Current Mood: Mostly peaceful, with bouts of nervousness.

Current #1 Blessing: Corey and my friends (HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEILA).

Current Slang or Saying: "Almost There." School is almost over. Vacation is almost here. Etc...

Current Outfit: My favorite jeans and an old t-shirt from a mechanic in Auburn. Flip-flops so my pretty toenails show.

Current Excitement: VACATION!

Remnants: Blog Tour

Remnants is the first book written by Marisa Gary and published by Strongtower Media & Entertainment. Here is a quick interview with the lovely author herself...

What is your favorite place to write?

My favorite place to write is out on my lanai in the fall with the fan on, my laptop and a cup of coffee. However, I now use a desktop and have my own office in the house, so that’s a good second. I have to be alone when I write. My thoughts come so fast most of the time that I have to concentrate very hard or I will lose where I am going, and that makes me very frustrated. :)

Do you prefer to hand write or to type?

I have to type. I type 10x faster than I write and I can, of course, edit on the fly. The funny thing is, I can’t bring my computer with me to Haiti so I will have to hand write everything. That is going to be a huge challenge.

Do you have a favorite pen or pencil brand/style?

Yes! I love glass blown pens. If there is one thing I would collect, it would be those. I have a few and I love to write with them.

What is your favorite writing memory?

That’s an interesting question, because I haven’t been writing all that long. What I can say though is that when I am done writing, I go back and read what I’ve written for the first time. When I read my devotions, it’s like I’ve never seen them before and I am reading someone else’s work. It’s truly amazing to me. Not only does God give me the words, but He also lets me experience them.

Can we expect future books?

Yes! As a matter of fact, I've started writing my second book already. I hope to call it, "Here I am Lord, Send Me." It will be a devotion for missionaries. I am headed to Haiti in just a few months on a mission trip and am looking forward to see what God has planned for me to write about getting ready, about going and about serving. I'm so excited!

Simple Woman's Daybook - May 7

Outside my window... it is still a bit dreary in Mississippi. It stormed off and on for the last 24 hours or so, but now the rain has finally stopped. The ground is wet and the grass is green, and all of it is oddly beautiful.

I am thinking... about how amazing our God is. I am training my focus onto all of the miracles He has worked for His people throughout history and all of the daily blessings He showers over my life.

I am thankful for... the beautiful Body of Christ. The way friends will lift one another up to God. The way we can share our burdens.

In the learning room... Haydn has a field trip to the zoo today. He was pretty excited. Yesterday, David's preschool hosted a Mother's Day Tea. He served me my lunch and sang for me, etc... It was very sweet.

From the kitchen... Today I am going to Mary's, along with Kristen, to hang out by the pool and eat tuna salad, fruit and peanut butter pie. May not be MY kitchen, but it's all good. ;)

I am creating... I finally got started on Leila's high school scrapbook. YAY!

I am going... to take David to school in a bit, finish folding the boys' laundry and read for a while.

I am wearing... dark blue jeans and a bright red tee. And my complaint free bracelet (Day 1: Take 9)

I am reading... a lot of Isaiah passages. The second half of Isaiah is so comforting to me. It was written as God drew the Israelites out of exile and back to Jerusalem. It is full of comfort and restoration. These are things I am praying for right now. I am also reading The Box Garden by Carol Shields and I started Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott.

I am hoping... for comfort and restoration.

I am hearing... the dryer full of the boys' clothes and my dog crunching on his food.

Around the house... lots of decluttering to do.

One of my favorite things... I discovered the prayer room at church, this week. I had known it was there, but I had yet to go visit it. It is wonderful. Dimly lit and peaceful. I plan to spend more time there.

A few plans for the rest of the week... Kristen is keeping the boys tomorrow and Saturday, while Corey and I drive to Natchez for a wedding. We get to see Leila and Matt. YAY!

Hymn of Grateful Praise

I have a feeling the preschool choir directors sang their own hymn of grateful praise when all of this was over.
